Frederick Funston papers, 1881-1973 (bulk 1891-1917).

Primarily personal and professional correspondence, documents, reports, newspaper clippings and magazine articles to, from, and about Frederick Funston. Raised near Iola, Kan., he gained national prominence as a military leader during the Spanish American War, 1898. This collection documents his career. Miscellaneous papers, clippings, and correspondence of the General's wife, Eda Blankart Funston, are also included and date to 1932. Personal correspondence includes letters to Frederick Funston's parents and sisters Elizabeth & Ella; there is correspondence from Charles S. Gleed as well. His military papers, outside of personal documents of promotion, contain no military records as such. Also in the collection are clippings about Funston's military exploits in Cuba & the Philippines during & after the Spanish-American War; in San Francisco, Calif., after the 1906 earthquake; and at Fort Leavenworth (Kan.), in Hawaii, & in Mexico as well as clippings about his wife, which date from the 1890s to a number of years after the General's death. The microfilm contains material distinct from the original records in the collection. Included on the film are military correspondence; letters to friends & members of his family, 1892-1908; scrapbooks with clippings; notes; excerpts from publications; letters, pictures, & cartoons relating to the life and death of General Funston and the battleship Frederick Funston; Cuban & Filipino documents; notes on Funston by his wife; a diary of Captain William G. Ball, Funston's aide-de-camp, 1913-1915; and a statement about & a report of Funston's 1895 Alaska & Northwest Territories expedition. Other correspondents include Joseph L. Bristow, Charles F. Scott, William Allen White, and Leonard Wood.
